Hey, that's pretty cool Great explanation for why flash cards aren't good for learning. They've been kind of useful for REALLY early stuff like basic vocabulary, or for things you see on signage (because those ARE singular words in isolation). For the very early stuff they can be helpful, especially in a language like Russian or Japanese if you are transitioning from English. I should have mentioned their utility in learning a new alphabet. Practicing the pronunciation of single words while you learn to sound things out is easier/better than phrases and full sentences.

Yeah, the alphabet was just mostly basic memorization, with a bit of phonetic pairs. Most consonants sound different with or ю я е ё after them. But honestly I memorized the alphabet on the flight over. It's not hard.
