Rapidly becoming conversational in French

Welcome, aspiring polyglot! The ability to recognize familiar patterns quickly is one of the most valuable skills you can develop during your language study. As you put more time and energy into understanding the various basic phrase patterns you will find that, often, recognizing patterns has a higher return on investment than complicated grammatical explanations. That said, when you are just starting out or if you are working on your second language it can be next to impossible to know what you do not yet know.

Understanding conversations

When you are getting started with any language, one of the most important things to figure out is which language learning patterns you can lean on to begin conversing as quickly as possible. This means primarily focusing on the pleasantries and daily conversations you would likely be having.

The reason for this is simple, the more you speak the more you will speak. Your confidence will grow even if you are only saying 5 or 10 words at a time. You will learn ways to buy yourself time and you will, more importantly, learn which words you need to be able to recognize immediately due to the fact that they are used so often.

For the most part, the ways you begin a conversation and the ways you end a conversation will be pretty similar every single time. Therefore, if you take time to lay a strong foundation you will only have to actually think about the middle of the conversation. It may not sound like much, but it is less brain power you need to allocate to different parts of the conversation. Learning a basic phrase patterns that you can utilize long after the first conversation you have will pay off indefinitely.
