Welcome, aspiring polyglot! In order to master second language acquisition, it is imperative that a proper framework be adopted. The times of sitting and memorizing flashcards have come and gone. There is no grade anymore. Language learning goes far beyond what is provided in schools and attempts at adopting a public education framework would leave anyone discouraged and feeling inadequate. But how does one go about overcoming this when they essentially have never experienced anything different? We will answer that question here. Keep in mind, while developing your language skills is simple, it will not be easy.

Do What Works for You

One of the most important things I cannot emphasize enough is doing what works for you. The biggest problem with the public education system as it is set up is that there is no way to craft an individual plan for each individual student. This means that all students must necessarily learn the same way, or fail. If you want to see more of my feelings on this topic, check here.

Now, let’s discuss ways to build yourself a framework. First, and most importantly, write out your strengths and weaknesses. Are you a visual learner? Do you prefer to listen to things? What about creating your own content?

You need to understand the way you learn, this is not only relevant to second language acquisition.

Copying someone else is fine, if they learn the same way as you, but if you are a hands-on learner and you’re taking advice from someone with an eidetic memory you may find yourself struggling in the same ways you did under the public education system. This is about maximizing your talents and minimizing your weaknesses.
